Great studio in Kailua

Review submitted: October 12, 2017

Review from: Guest from Portland Oregon

Date of Stay: September 2017

This was our first trip to Hawaii with an infant. We enjoyed our stay at Tropical Garden Studio. The owner was kind, friendly and helpful. She greeted us with warm smile, great information and a lot of good fruits in fridge. During our stay, she helped us alot with bus and travel information. Beside that, the studio's location is great. You can easily reach all good places in Kailua. Definitely we will stay here again if we have a chance to be back to Hawaii

A Friendly Welcome

Review from: Julie & Rick from Lowestoft, United Kingdom

Date of Stay: 26th August 2017

A very friendly & helpful host making us feel very welcome and feel comfortable in using their amenities. The room was a bit too cosy and lacking proper cooking facilities, although we managed. We were worried about the cooking heat and steam on the light fittings in the kitchen area, we thought it a safety issue. Unfortunately for us Oahu was going through a unusual heat and with only a fan we were roasting at night while in bed. I think if we were in the separate accommodation it would have been better for us. An ideal location for travelling around the island and the local beach.

Truly nice place

Review from: Joe B from Alliance, Alberta

Date of Stay: March 2017

Our stay at Tropical Gardens home was truly a nice one. The best part of course was the hospitality of Margaret, who waited up for our late arrival. The place is so pleasant and accommodating. I loved the pool and the beautiful back yard, and the neighboring guests in the cabin were genuine. Margaret even accepted our nephew for a night without charge. Such a gracious woman! The town atmosphere of Kailua was wonderful and the beach not far away, and the main highway for the east coast not far either. The town has plenty of shopping and restaurants. I would stay here again without a problem - and with slightly bigger kitchen facilities my wife and I could even see ourselves staying a month or more. Thanks, Margaret! Mahalo!

The room is quiet and private, about three blocks from one of the best beaches on Oahu. Kailua is a nice town with shopping close by and plenty of places to eat. Margaret is a welcoming and helpful hostess. We felt like locals.

We were lucky enough to stay here for 4 nights on the way back from 6 weeks traveling. It was a perfect place to relax in the beautiful private garden setting.
The swimming pool was perfect size, perfect temperature and it is where we spent most of our time.
Barbara is a very warm and helpful host.
Thanks for having us.

The accommodation was exactly right for my particular needs this trip -- peaceful and quiet with lovely gardens and pool. Close enough to beaches, restaurants and stores, but out of the mainstream. Comfortable room whose door opened into the gardens, with small private patio under a mango tree. Kitchenette cubby with coffee, microwave, mini-fridge, and fresh fruit on arrival. Friendly hostess & host.

Nice people, good location, not very private

Review submitted: July 03, 2016

Review from: J from Brooklyn, New York

Date of Stay: June 2016

My partner and I had a lovely stay in the studio-- it's a great location (walking distance to the beach), the owners are very kind and helpful, the bed is comfortable and the room is clean, and I just love Kailua. Everything we needed was there and accessible nearby. We weren't home very much while we were there (we only stayed 3 nights), but while we were we slept well and I wish we had had a chance to enjoy the pool if we'd been home more.

The only challenge was that the studio is just between the owners' back door and a second (also attached) studio that is rented to a small family of four. This meant very little privacy-- if you want to keep your blinds open (which you will, for the light and the breeze--it's Hawaii for goodness sake!), you are likely to see/hear and be seen/heard by at least one or two of the other members of the household. We were there for 3 nights and not home much but still accidentally flashed the neighbors a couple of times-- sorry guys! :) And I'm sure we heard each other's activities a couple of times as well.

My partner and I had such a great, relaxing time. The room was cozy and inviting, and we were so close to the beach. We had plenty of privacy from other guests and great access to the pool all day and night. Overall, an ideal way to spend our reading week and get away from the grey winter weather in Vancouver.

Garden Paradise

Review submitted: May 12, 2015

Review from: Ulla from Vancouver, B.C.

Date of Stay: April 2015

The studio is pretty much as described by others, a little rustic but very well equipped and comfortable, despite some lack of privacy due to its situation at the corner of the house. The bed was comfortable with good cotton linens, the shower newly tiled, plenty of towels and little extras. The location is ideal: equidistant to the fabulous beach and downtown with all necessities and comforts of home, including the library, as well as the farmers' market a couple of blocks down the street. We enjoyed having our meals sitting in the lovely garden, surrounded by birds, mokos (geckos all over the place), being part of a residential neighbourhood which was very quiet at night. Margaret and David are the most gracious hosts, always helpful and informative, without being intrusive. Margaret cheerfully waited up for a extremely late arrival and even expertly removed a tick from my spouse's arm. We stayed three weeks and were sorry to have to leave, but certainly hope to return.

Good budget friendly option

Review submitted: November 30, 2014

Review from: Guest from Alberta, Canada

Date of Stay: November 2014

We stayed for a week and went with a "condo" rental in order to save some money on accomodations and spend it having fun instead. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The house is a great location and it's very easy to get around. Close to the beach and restaurants. We barely used our car and generally walked and biked everywhere.
The room: It's serviceable and clean. Lots of linens available and it's nice to have some extras like a-tips and sunscreen there. It was also nice that some juices, coffee and fruit was probived in the fridge. However, no A/C so it got really hot and it was too windy at night to leave the patio door open as it would blow our blinds all over the room. I wish they would change the vertical blinds to actual curtains as there is very little privacy in the corner room since the path goes right by your windows. The privacy issue was my biggest problem with this property.
Amenities: The pool is nice and quiet. A good option when you want some quiet away from the people at the beach. A couple lounge chairs would be a good addition. The bikes are usable but are in serious need of some maintenance. Just be aware of their condition before you use them and pedal out into traffic. No issues with the wifi. It was great to be able to do some laundry as well.

Overall, we had a nice stay. I think it was good value for the money. Some minor changes would make this property so much better but it's still very nice.

A Wonderful Experience!

Review submitted: October 24, 2014

Review from: Jenny & Brenda from Lawndale, CA

Date of Stay: October 2014

My cousin, Brenda, and I stayed at the studio for a full week. When we first got there Margaret, our hostess, was ready to greet us with a big hug and smile. She sat down with us at the dining room table, a huge map of Kailua and Oahu in front of us, and began circling the best places to shop, eat, visit, the beaches, etc. We were shown to our room which was nice and clean with a TV, DVD player, cable, phone with US calls, iPod stereo, bathroom with a shower and toilet, and a closet filled with clean linens, blankets, towels, pillows, etc.

One side of the closet had all the utilities you'd need such forks, knives, spoons, mugs, cups, plates, a tray to hold your food in, mini crock pot, electric water boiler, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster. There were also mini kitchen towels if needed. The mini refrigerator had goodies such as coffee, refreshments, tangerines, a papaya, lemon, and apples. There was ice in the freezer cubby and table lamps everywhere. We had everything! The sink cupboard was stocked well with sunscreen spray and lotion, q-tips, lotion, sponge and soap for dish washing, shaving cream, shampoo and conditioner, and even tampons and pads for women. The washer and dryer w as to our disposal and was situated next to our room which was a plus.

The salt water pool was something new. It was a little strange, but we got used to it quickly and loved going in either early in the morning or late at night. Margaret and her husband were very accommodating. They would turn on the pool lights for us so we could swim, even when it was already 9 o'clock. Her husband is almost deaf, so a big smile and waving hello is enough to catch his attention. A very sweet man. He blew us a kiss!

We stayed here from October 6th until the 12th which, according to usual weather reports, it was supposed to be mild weather, rainy even. Unfortunately the temperature stayed in the constant 90's which meant the room would be very hot. There was a ceiling fan and windows, but it would only push the hot air around. If we decided to leave the sliding door to the room open during the night so the night air would come in, the mosquitoes would come and feast on our legs since there was no screen. We learned to sleep on top of a cold, wet towel to cool us off enough to fall asleep. An a/c would definitely be heavenly in this room.

Other than that, everything was wonderful. Our stay here was the best thing we could have come up with, especially on a budget. Our host was amazing and we miss her dearly. We'll definitely stay here again if we decide to visit Oahu again!

Review submitted: June 28, 2014

Review from: CanadianGuest from Calgary,AlbertA

Date of Stay: June 2014

We enjoyed our stay here and ultimately you get what you pay for. We opted to spend our money on the island and not on our accommodations, hence our choice here. Was not poor, was not great, just average. Pool was nice. Privacy at night (changing etc) is not great, make sure your lights are out as people in the other suite at this location walk by the window and can see directly in even with the blinds across the window. Did not like this part. Otherwise, the price is hard to beat. Really wish we did not have to screw around with cash and cheques; it would have been much nicer to just pay all online.

a simple charming place, near beach, in a residential neighborhood.

Review submitted: April 22, 2014

Review from: Bruce from Tacoma, WA.

Date of Stay: April 2014

The room is simple, the neighborhood real, and the beach near. If you need a Waikiki beachfront hotel, this isn't your place. However, if you would like a little time away from the noise and clamor of Waikiki, this town and place may just fit. Part of the charm is the friendly owner with her easy laugh, Margaret, as other reviewers have mentioned. Also, though he mostly smiles and waves (as he's getting deaf) her recently retired Opthamologist husband will entertain you with his backflips and bottom dives in the nice salt water pool you cam ise. Oh, btw, he's 94 years young. A simple, quirky, friendly place with a nice pool in a pleasant bedroom beach town with no hotels, not tons of tourists, but actual locals and good restaurants. Not for everyone, but a lot to like for many people.

Affordable paradise it is

Review submitted: March 25, 2014

Review from: Pep from San Jose California

Date of Stay: March 2014

It starts with a smile from the owner, a tour of the property, seeing the nice salt (very light) water pool. Then you open your fridge and discover some good coffee and many cans of fruit juice to accompany the morning pastry waiting for you next to the bowl of fruits. The internet was good and the use of bicycle fun to check out the action at the beach or checking out the quite neighborhood. And it ended with a hug and a please come back from Margaret.

I stayed at the Tropical Garden studio on a business trip recently. I was looking to get away from all of the crowds at Waikiki. I couldn't have asked for anything more. From the beginning, Margaret was so sweet and welcoming and even helped me find my way around. The studio was cozy and had a great location, just a short walk to Kailua beach. Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Beautiful flowers all around and it had just enough privacy too. All the amenities of your basic hotel including TV, wifi, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, etc. I would highly recommend it for 1-2 guests looking for something different!

Our hosts were very helpful and gave us plenty of valuable information about the area, which we really appreciated. The studio is very quiet and overlooks a beautiful garden. We could help ourselves to Mangoes that were falling off the tree by the dozen. The pool was very nice and refreshing. The studio itself is small and quite cluttered and fairly rustic. It doesn't offer too much privacy as there is another rental cottage in the garden with people walking past. It's definitely not the Hilton but we found it fairly comfortable and quiet and centrally located.

This is a quirky but lovely tranquil place to stay. Don't expect a hotel-like offering, but what you will find is a most charming, friendly and helpful host in Margaret. Her garden, with the kidney shaped pool is full of colour and birdsong. The accommodation is modest and kitchen facilities are basic but clean and manageable. It is well located for wonderful beach, café, restaurants and town.

My husband and I spent 3 wonderful days at the Tropical Garden Studio. It was just what we were looking for - comfortable, peaceful, quiet, near the beach but also a great location to get to know the "locals". Our hostess, Barbara, was so helpful with providing directions and suggestions of places to visit. Everything was within a quick walk - the beach, restaurants, and the neighborhood farmer's market at the school. It was relaxing and beautiful! We hope to return soon!
