Our Own Little Paradise

Review submitted: April 25, 2017

Review from: Steve & Denise from South Lake Tahoe, CA

Date of Stay: April 11- 21, 2017

Having read all the previous reviews, after returning from Oahu, it is hard to add anything more to the glowing accolades already bestowed upon Norm & Millie. We will attest to the fact that all reviews are all 100% true and if we could rate this cottage higher than 5 stars we would!

Such hospitality. They truly embrace 'Aloha' and have this hosting thing down to a science. Their attention to detail (and comfort) is truly amazing. They even had a toothbrush holder, I mean- awesome stuff here!

We didn't want to leave and we thank our gracious hosts for making our third trip to this island a "charm". We desperately miss our Kailua treehouse in the sky and the warmness of Norm & Millie.

Mahalo for the unforgettable memories!

Wonderful time spent in Norm and Millie's back yard. Peaceful mornings on the deck listening to the birds and watching the turtles. The cottage was well appointed with everything I needed thanks to Norm and Millie and past guests. I rented a bike from The Bike Shop right in Kailua and found it to be a great way to get around town, no hills in Kailua.

We enjoyed our stay here. The hosts provided a 'welcome' basket with fruit and other goodies along with some other basic food supplies. It was very much appreciated. This unit was the cleanest condo/vacation rental I've ever stayed in. The pride the hosts take in their property was obvious. The host/hostess were very friendly & helpful when needed. The unit is exactly as the photos. A good size for two.

The aloha spirit is well manifested in this sweet suite we stayed in for a week ....never have we been so well supplied with groceries, a gift basket full of goodies awaited us and in the fridge, eggs, milk and butter and all the condiments we could possibly need , something we really appreciated.
Millie and Norm are very kind, friendly and respectful hosts, around to help us with any questions but not at all intrusive. The neighbourhood is very quiet and safe, and we walked the short distance to Kailua Beach as well as to town , left our rental car parked many days.
Thanks Norm and Millie, for being such gracious and generous hosts

From window, trade winds comes abytime, so very comfortable feeling.
We definitely will come back here in Kailua!!

We had a great stay in this beautifully appointed studio apartment. Norm and Millie were welcoming hosts, full of information and very generous. The location is perfect for the beach and exploring the island, particularly the east / north coasts but we went all around. There are also loads of very local shops and good restaurants. The balcony is a wonderful place to unwind. We thoroughly recommend this place for a couple or 3 people that know each other well (I was travelling with my parents) We left very relaxed indeed.

Best Rental in Kailua

Review submitted: June 04, 2016

Review from: Mrs. Moore from Oakland, CA

Date of Stay: May 2016

This place was absolutely perfect. The photos online are very accurate. It's a stand alone unit behind the owner's house, on the top floor (their sewing workshop is on the ground floor). It is a cute studio divided into a sleeping area, living room area, full kitchen & bathroom, closet, and desk. The bed was very comfortable, I have a sensitive back, but experienced no issues with the bed. You have a nice lanai that overlooks the mountains and the gorgeous backyard that is full of fruit trees and turtles! Millie & Norm greeted us upon arrival and there was basket of food waiting for us inside. The unit comes with plenty of supplies like shampoos, sunblock, towels, cooler, beach mats, and boogie boards. It really is just down the street from Kailua Beach and about a 10 minute walk into town. The unit was quiet and pleasant with a nice breeze. You have a designated parking spot, just pull into the grass driveway to the left of the house. If you aren't driving, this place would work well, because the bus is just around the corner. I have stayed at many rentals throughout the Hawaiian islands and this was my favorite. The place was very clean and tidy, the hosts were super sweet, and you're close to everything. My husband and I would definitely stay at the Palm Cottage again.

Millie and Norm are the nicest, most generous and helpful people and their Palm Cottage is a delightful, clean, nicely decorated, comfortable home-away-from-home place to stay. Our visiting grandchildren got a kick out of seeing the sunning turtles (and so did we). It was an easy walk to a playground at the end of the block, the beach, Island Snow and Bob's Pizza, the farmer's markets and town. The welcome basket and food in the frig was so nice. We highly recommend this place!

We just come back from our very first time in Hawaii, and I must say I am already planning my next trip there. The Palm Cottage owners, warm, kind, and accommodating Norm and Millie, are the best hosts you can wish for. The property is impeccably clean, well maintained, cozy, with all the new kitchen applainces, and located close to the most beautiful beach I've seen. Thank you so much guys!

i would return to this lovely cottage if I visited Oahu again. The location is perfect: near a beautfiul sandy beach, not too far from other interesting places to visit. The cottage is cozy and spacious, and it has a nice veranda overseeing a tropical garden. The most notable aspect is the welcoming presence of Millie and Norm, who filled the condo with so much stuff for our breakfast and provided a huge variety of amenities for a perfect beach life. Highly recommended!

Lovely, Quiet, All the Amenities of Home

Review submitted: May 18, 2015

Review from: Guest from Boise, Idaho

Date of Stay: April 2015

From the moment I arrived, I almost felt like I was returning home. Norm greeted me as I pulled into the driveway and helped carry my bags into the ohana. I had read that Norm and Millie provide visitors with some groceries upon arrival so guests won't have to find food late at night. I had written to them that wouldn't be necessary as I am gluten-intolerant and, therefore, difficult to shop for, but they had some gluten-free groceries ready for me nonetheless!
Norm and Millie's ohana is lovely and just as pictured. It's equipped with everything I needed to make the place home for the week, including cookware, utensils, and Wi-Fi. It does not have air conditioning, but it does have ceiling fans, and the trade winds blow through, keeping the place comfortable.
Their home is in a residential neighborhood, and the ohana is surrounded by several neighbors, but it's a quiet neighborhood. I was able to hear a boxing match one night coming from two different homes, but the match and the party next door ended early enough that it didn't interfere with sleep.
In terms of location, it is very nice. Kailua Beach is only a five or ten minute walk away, and Whole Foods and other stores are only a short drive from their home.
All in all, I had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend Millie and Norm and their ohana to anyone wanting a quiet retreat in Kailua.

Review from: Ken & Ann from Boise, Idaho

Date of Stay: April 2015

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Palm Cottage. Norm and Millie made us feel like we were family, and we enjoyed many conversations with them. They had a nice gift basket full of treats for us, and many items in the refrigerator and cupboards. We had everything we needed to be comfortable and relaxed. The cottage was very clean and airy. It's in a convenient location, not more than 10 to 15 minutes of walking to Kailua Beach Park. It only took a few minutes more to walk to our favorite Lanakai Beach. A short drive took us to stores and restaurants. We also enjoyed watching the pet turtles from the cottage porch. If we come back to Hawaii in the next year or two we will try to stay at the Palm Cottage again. The booking and payment for this property went very smooth, which made the whole trip work out very well.

Our Stay at Palm Cottage was fantastic and the only regret is that we could not stay longer. It exceeded our expectations in terms of cleanliness and available amenities (especially after the dodgy accommodations we had in Haleiwa. In no way related to Affordable Paradise). Barbara with Affordable Paradise was also very accommodating as our Kailua portion of the trip was booked last and we were running out of options.

This place is a hidden treasure! Norm and Millie are gracious hosts and the unit is well-stocked with food and a full kitchen. We had a wonderful stay at Palm Cottage. It was a perfect home away from home and had everything you need to make your holiday comfortable.
A good location to walk into town and to the beach.
The owners left a nice goody basket and stocked the fridge with start up groceries which is great if you have a late arrival.
There are so many windows so you get a cross breeze,
so no need for air conditioning.
We'll be back again!

We spent four nights in the Palm Cottage, which is a very nice studio apartment that is the entire second floor above a back yard workshop. My husband and I were on Oahu for a week in November on business. At the end of long days, it was a pleasure to return to the Palm Cottage or "the house" as we affectionately called it. It was always cozy and comfortable. Millie and Norm were gracious hosts and had the refrigerator stocked when we arrived. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a quite rental just far enough from the hustle and bustle, and traffic of Honolulu. If you are visiting Oahu you should stay at the Palm Cottage.

Home away from home!!!

Review submitted: July 28, 2014

Review from: Little Bee from Birmingham Alabama

Date of Stay: July 2014

Staying at Palm Cottage was the BEST part of our trip to Hawaii!!! Words can't adequately express what an AMAZING place this is! The owners, Millie & Norm, went ABOVE & BEYOND to do everything they could to help us. . . we felt like we were house guests of close friends/family!!! Our cottage was PERFECT for us! At first we were hesitant when we heard there was no A/C-however, we found out immediately that our concern was in vain. There were numerous windows (with screens & blinds) that welcomed the ocean breeze CONSTANTLY. We stayed cool the entire time. . . the temperature was perfect. It added to the Hawaiian atmosphere-it was incredibly pleasant. (tip: make sure you raise the blinds when you sleep-as the wind will knock them against the window frame. :-) The windows are high enough above the bed that you won't be visible from outside). The cottage itself is SUPER clean. . . in fact, everything in it appears to be brand new. Millie & Norm thought of everything a house guest could possibly need OR WANT!!! As soon as we arrived they greeted us with a basket full of basic food necessities & treats. We had apples, bananas, Hawaiian jelly, sweet rolls, pastries, Hawaiian chocolates, chips, and salsa. The fridge was stocked with milk, eggs, fruit juice, sausage, etc. The cupboards were also filled with all kinds of food & condiments. We hardly had to buy any groceries at all!!!! The bathroom was stocked with beach towels, beach bag, a cooler beach bags, sunblock, soaps, shampoo, shower gel, hair dryer, lotions, & more!!! They also provide an iron. On top of all of this, we even found out that we would have access to our own "DVD rental place"! Norm has a HUGE collection of DVD movies & we borrowed a few. After a busy day of activities, it was so nice to relax watching a good movie at night! (they even provided popcorn : )! The view from the porch is amazing! Millie & Norm have been gifted with "green thumbs" & their backyard is a mini botanical garden. All kinds of fruit trees, beautiful flowers, and plants covered their yard. Millie even generously shared a butternut squash & papaya with us! The walk to Kailua beach took about 10-12 minutes. One day we even walked to Lanikai Beach (about 25 minutes). The walk to town (plenty of grocery stores & restaurants was around 10 minutes). Any questions we had, Millie & Norm were MORE than willing to help us, and offer fantastic advice about the island. If I could sum up the cottage in a word "AMAZING" MUST STAY!!!

The place had just been newly redone and everything was very clean and nice. Norm and Millie were great hosts, even thinking of extras like breakfast food for the first day and moving in an extra bed. We loved having the location within an easy walk to the beach. I was very pleased and satisfied with the accommodations. The space is divided well, the kitchen is fully stocked, the bathroom is user-friendly and clean, and the host gave me plenty of privacy which is what I was looking for. I don't rent a car when I travel to avoid the traffic and the unit is very near the bus stop so its an easy, inexpensive commute from Waikiki and once settled in the unit is a short walk to the beach and to my favorite Whole Foods.
