Great vacation

Review submitted: March 06, 2017

Review from: Gloria from Wisconsin

Date of Stay: February 2017

Enjoy our 2 week stay. Great location. Very caring landlords.
Close to beach, shops, and restaurants. We loved the Thursday night market suggested by landlord. We went twice. Internet was hit and miss, but landlord is working on that. Only suggestion I might have is to have an ottoman in living room area to put your feet up after a busy day of walking. Pool was great for a quick dip and very private.
Would definetly recommend this quaint cottage experience to anyone.

We immediately felt at home in this cottage and found everything that we needed. We enjoyed the walking distance to Kailua Beach and went to watch the sunset in the mornings. We also enjoyed the walking distance to Kailua town with shops and restaurants. Thank you Gabriele for your friendly hospitality!

Convenient and quiet

Review submitted: January 12, 2017

Review from: Guest from Portland, OR

Date of Stay: December 2016

My wife, son, and I visited family, who live in Kailua, over the Christmas 2016 holiday. The Aloha cottage was a very good value. Its location made it very easy to go to several nice beaches (Kailua and Lanikai). The owners provided many nice items to help make our beach trips easy including chairs, towels, umbrella, and a cooler. We traveled all over the island to snorkel at many beautiful beaches including Makaha, Sharks Cove, Electric Beach, Kailua beach, Lanikai, Ewa, and even took the kids in our extended family to Waikiki to surf.

The cottage had a pull out murphy-type bed that our son said was very comfortable. Cooking in the cottage kept costs down and the owners stocked it with many of the items needed to make meal preparation very easy.

A big plus was the off street parking designated for each cottage that can accommodate 1 car. The property is located besides a large park with swings that would be helpful for families traveling with small children.

Although we did not spend much time at the property, the owners also have a pool included with the rental that all guests can use.

Something that would have been very helpful would be access to a washer/dryer.

We would definitely stay here again.

Date of Stay: February 2016

My wife and I enjoyed our stay. The cottage was a short walk from the best beach I have found thus far. 2.5 miles of good walking and swimming. Kailua town is a great alternative to the congestion of Honolulu yet, within easy driving when we wanted some city life. the place itself was clean and had everything we needed from a coffee maker to beach towels and chairs. We will be back.

GREAT LOCATION - LOVELY PEOPLE

Review submitted: December 23, 2015

Review from: Dennis & Lisa from Auckland, New Zealand

Date of Stay: December 2015

Our family of 4 stayed at the cottage earlier this month. A bit tight, but we are all family after all and were given an extra fold out bed so that the kids didn't need to sleep together.
The cottage is located approximately 5 mins walk from the beach and 10 mins to city centre where there are plenty of shops, places to eat etc.
The owners were amongst the friendliest people that we met in Hawaii and simply couldn't do enough for us. Admittedly we had concerns about the barking dogs that we read about in previous reviews. A few barks next door when they were let out late morning, but certainly no problems or inconvenience.
In summary a character cottage in a great location, great value and LOVELY people.

Ginger Cottage

Review submitted: December 17, 2015

Review from: Kelly from Silverstrand Beach, CA

Date of Stay: November 2015

My Husband Max and I visited Kailua to spend some time with my Daughter & Granddaughter who live there. We found the Ginger Cottage (not the Aloha Cottage) very suitable for our needs. The location was very good near Kailua Town and within walking distance to beaches. The cottage was roomy by vacation cottage standards with a separate bedroom and living area. The kitchenette was extremely well stocked and we appreciated the little extras such as coffee and spices, it had ample small appliances and utensils. We also loved the outside space which we used for meals and morning coffee frequently during our stay. One negative is the fold out couch bed which is well past usable function and should be replaced, which I do hope is done because I am returning to the islands in May and I would love to stay in the Ginger Cottage again.
The only reason for 4 Stars instead of 5 is the fold out bed.

Ginger Cottage

Review from: Tim from Auckland, New Zealand

Date of Stay: July 2015

As a family of four adults we had a great time at The Ginger Cottage. The one bedroom unit was perfect and having a fold our sofa in the lounge was a great addition. The sofa was a little hard and had some roll together issue but with a bit of adjusting was fine for the duration. Both Bedroom and lounge have high-wall air conditioners which was a lifesaver in the July Kailua heat and humidity. The Lanai at the entrance was a great space to have dinner, enjoy a cocktail and read a book. There is a great selection of beach towels, chairs, boogie boards and a sun umbrella which was nice. The 5min walk to the beach was easy and a great cafe along the way. The owners have some very cute dogs (2-3 Sausage Dogs) & they do love to bark and say hello.. If you're not a dog person then would not consider The Ginger Cottage. Will definitely be back when we're in Kailua but would only suggest 2 people over the 4 we had.

my husband was not thrilled with the barking of the little dogs, but they didn't bother me at all! (really, after an inital "hwy who are you?" bit of barking, they quieted right down...)

LOVED the location, the setting, the amenities and our hosts were fabulous!

Ginger Cottage is an excellent option for Kailua

Review from: SallyP from Medford, MA

Date of Stay: January 2015

Ginger Cottage is a great option for a stay in Kailua. An easy walk to the lovely beach, off street parking, and a comfortable small cottage with a kitchen, dining table, couch, chairs, tv and separate bedroom with a comfy bed. The unit has a small outdoor porch with table and chairs, is equipped with beach towels, chairs-- all in all nothing was really missing from making this a very pleasant stay for a fair price.

Our two week experience in Kailua at the Ginger Cottage during early December was excellent in every way! The Finns were very hospitable iand even though the cottage was only feet away from the main house, it was very private. The only recommendation we would make would be more comfortable living room furniture for sitting out any rainy days. You truly are an easy walk away from beach and town. We would very much look forward to returning in the future which is as good a recommendation one could make.

Cute and comfortable stay at perfect location

Review submitted: November 06, 2014

Review from: Nina from Stockholm, Sweden

Date of Stay: October 2014

Everything is as described.

We felt very comfortable during our stay in Ginger cottage. It has everything you need for a short stay (we stayed for one week). The hosts were friendly and helpful. We didn't see them much, nor the other guests (I think there are two more units for rent).

The bed is comfortable but the futon isn't. So all three of us (me and my two young children) slept on the bed. The hosts offered us an extra matress and I think this could make the futon more comfy :)

The cottage is in a perfect location in a quiet area - a short walk to Kalapawai market and Kailua beach.

Free wifi - connects better if you go outside closer to the main building.

I would love to stay there again.

Review from: Brinkerhoff from New Mexico

Date of Stay: August 2014

The ginger cottage was a nice place to stay. Although I had not realized that it didn't have a full kitchen, just a hot plate. Maybe it was on the description and I didn't notice it. The futon was pretty uncomfortable and needs a thicker futon mattress on it. But everything else was good. The location was good and close enough to the beach so that we could walk to it. Overall it was very nice. Thank you again to the Finns.

We enjoyed our relaxing stay at the Ginger cottage. We had everything we needed for the three of us to be comfortable and cook some of our meals. The Finns were very hospitable and provided a BBQ as well as some mangoes (from their tree.) The location was close to both Kailua town and the beaches at Kailua and Lanikai.

Review from: Desert Dweller from Phoenix, AZ

Date of Stay: June 2014

Overall our stay in the Ginger Cottage was pleasant. The living area was a little bit cramped since that was also were our two teenagers slept. The bed in the bedroom is very comfortable and we liked the patio area. It's also about a ten-minute walk to probably the nicest beach I've ever been to. Unlike some previous comments, we weren't disturbed by the dogs barking. However, the owners played somewhat loud music in the evenings in the backyard (right next to the cottage). If we were watching TV, we would have to close the door to hear the TV. Since there is no A/C, it would get warm with the door closed. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

Value In Kailua

Review submitted: June 15, 2014

Review from: Nixon Family from Atlanta, Georgia

Date of Stay: May 2014

We stayed 6 nights in Ginger Cottage with our teenage sons. The cottage was small but very cute with a well equipped kitchen, large bathroom, and nice garden patio. We were more interested in seeing the island than hanging out in luxury. The fold out sofa is small so we gave our kids the bigger bed in the bedroom while we cuddled on the smaller fold out. There's no ac but there are fans and a nice breeze. Loved the Kailua area and generally thought the southern part of the island from Kailua to Honolulu was the most beautiful.

Some favorites: Kailua Beach, Makapuu Point and Tidepools, Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and Shark's Cove, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl Cemetery, Manoa Falls area, Cinnamon's, Island Snow, Ono Hawaiian Foods, Leonard's Bakery, Rainbow Drive In.

We decided on Ginger Cottage after reading the reviews. Not disappointed. The cottage is quietly situated behind the main house. We loved the seating area outside which we used for all our meals. The cottage is not far from the main town or beach. It's a 15 minute drive to Honolulu which suited our needs. The owners are very friendly and helpful. We loved the cottage which has everything you need. Book with confidence.

Review submitted: April 09, 2014

Review from: Aussie travellers from Melbourne, Victoria

Date of Stay: September 2013

We stayed in this cottage for four nights. The location is quite good and within walking distance of shops/beach. The 'cottage' is a detached portable next to the house, but not very private as the outdoor area is next to the owners backyard, with some screening. You enter via a path down the side, passing another separate accommodation and therefore need to be conscious of not disturbing other guests. The cottage is quite dark inside, with a need to have lights on during the day. The general cleanliness of the property was only fair, for example there was mould on the shower curtain. We wouldn't return to this property.

Great Stay in Paradise!

Review submitted: April 03, 2014

Review from: Tangs from Coquitlam, BC

Date of Stay: March 2014

We stayed in Waikiki for the first half of our trip. We then rented a Jeep, drove to Kailua and spent the last 4 days there. This little town is the perfect place to relax. No big hotels and busy crowd like Waikiki. Ginger Cottage has everything that we needed except that there is no laundry, which is fine since we were only there for a few days. There is enough space for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids - 8&12). Bed is comfortable and kitchenette is well equipped although we only used it couple of times.
It is located only minutes walk to the beautiful Kailua Beach. Town is close by as well (approx. 20 mins walk). Beach towels, sand toys and many other beach accessories provided by the host are a great plus. Thanks for a wonderful stay n we hope to come back in the near future!

Date of Stay: October 23-31,2013

Our stay in Kailua was very nice. This cottage is unattached but very close to the main house. We were in the one bdr and it was very nice. The bathroom is big. Just 5 minutes walk to the beach allowed us to beachwalk every day. Kailua Bay/Beach is a very friendly beach. Lots of joggers, walkers and dogwalkers every morning and afternoon along with families that all say Hi or stop and talk. The cottage setting is rural, next to a small park. The only issue I had was the need to be quiet. While we aren't partiers, we didn't feel we could sit outside @ night and have a beer and chat without creating a disturbance. The owners are very nice. The grill is a small tabletop charcoal grill and the lighting isn't very good outside so be aware of that. Lots of grocery stores and restaurants/shopping in Kailua Town. All in all I would definitely come back, it's a very sweet town. It is in the process of building what look to be 3 condo buildings so be aware the it may get busier in coming years. Lanikai Beach next to Kailua is wonderful sand and good snorkeling -- very quiet beach.

Only thing that spoiled it was the small dogs barking when we'd go outside. We definitely would stay there again and hope for less barking but overall was so good that I'd try to put up with the noise again.

What a charming place to stay! I loved the feeling of having my own little cottage away from everything. It had everything I wanted, a covered lanai among flowers, a charming little living area with a kitchen, and a pretty little bedroom with a comfortable bed.
Our host went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He even let us store our luggage for an afternoon after we'd checked out so that we weren't worried about having everything in our car.
