Affordable Paradise - Hawaii or The Big Island, "The Orchid Isle"
They call it The Big Island, and even that is an understatement. Hawaii is almost twice as large as all the other Hawaiian islands combined.
Its twin volcanic peaks, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, dwarf most mountains. Kilauea, a third volcano, is one of the worlds most active craters. Since its most recent series of eruptions began in 1983, the volcano has deleted almost 200 houses.
Hilo's frequent rainfalls keep things cool and make the flowers grow - The Big Island has one of the biggest Orchid-anthurium industries.
